Project Overview
Creating a garden and landscape design for clients who were living overseas.
Project Details
This was an interesting and challenging project initially as our clients Antonia, Rick and their two daughters were living in Hong Kong during the entire consultation and construction process. After numerous discussions with Antonia via email and Whatsapp, l felt like l had enough information to proceed with a detailed landscape design.
The house on the property had officially had a renovation but in fact it was totally rebuilt but reflected the old cottage which was known as “The Whitehouse”. After the rebuild the property was a bit of a mess so besides 3 trees I wanted to keep ,the remainder of what was left of the garden was to be cleared which left us a total blank canvas .
Our clients are very clean and neat by nature as was their sparkly new Whitehouse so the design and the garden that resulted would need to reflect and embrace these stipulations and criteria. Although the house was new and slick it still was a weatherboard cottage with some stone used in places. The general feel of our design was to be a modern cottage garden.
We needed numerous retaining walls on the property and were able to source stone locally that was very similar to the tones of the one used in the house. We placed some large boulders in situ at the rear of the property to retain a large bank and then constructed some beautiful Carey Gulley curved dry stone walls that would wrap around the front lawn and garden. We installed a bold flat top white picket fence along the front of the property and two large automatic vehicle gates of the same material which complimented and engaged with the house.
In the rear of the property we constructed a pergola with climbing roses at the entrance and a double wisteria growing on top. The large exposed aggregate driveway also took up similar tones of the stone walls so all the hard landscaping parts of the project were very cohesive. Being on a busy exposed corner block we planted hedges around the edge of the property and internally planted large drifts of “pretty” perennials for Antonia and her two girls . A vertical timber baton screen with weld mesh panels was also installed to block out the neighbours.
Outcome
As we constructed this garden and even more so now when we maintain the garden, we always get people walking by admiring, enjoying and commenting on what a beautiful garden we have created. Recently, it was featured in the 2023 SA Landscape Festival.
Our clients and their two daughters were used to living in high rise apartments and now just love being in their own garden. Its such a pleasure being given the privilege to create such spaces for people to enjoy and is certainly one of the more fulfilling parts of what we do as designers, landscapers and gardeners.

“After fully restoring our Stirling cottage, we engaged Jamie and his team to design our outdoor spaces. Our garden was non-existent, and we gave Jamie free reign to create what he thought would best complement our house and its surrounds. The end result is stunning. Jamie’s vision included comprehensive landscaping, stonework that brings to life the stonework of our cottage, and a range of plants, shrubs and flowers than result in the garden looking vibrant throughout the year.
Jamie’s team managed the whole project; including all landscaping, design of a pergola, building a range of walkways and seating areas, installing watering and lighting systems, and overseeing the construction of our automated gates, fences, and driveway. We are frequently complimented on our garden, and how it enhances the renovations we completed on our house.
As impressive as the garden itself, is Jamie’s ongoing dedication to keeping our garden in top condition. His team are quick and responsive, and keep a constant eye on things for us; which as non-gardeners is appreciated. His ongoing commitment is reassuring, and the enhancements he and the team make are subtle, yet beautiful; helping to keep the garden constantly looking its best. Jamie and his team are professional, creative and have a vision for the “could-be”. His ongoing maintenance and support is reliable, consistent and of a high quality. We have been very happy with the work that Jamie has done for us, and continues to complete for us, on an ongoing basis.“
